United Kingdom

Modern Monarchies

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom or Britain, is a country in northwestern Europe comprising England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In 1707 the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland united under the Treaty of Union to create the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the Acts of Union 1800 incorporated the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. Most of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922 as the Irish Free State, and the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act 1927 created the present United Kingdom. FAQs

When was the United Kingdom created, in 1707 or 1800?

England and Scotland were joined in 1707, and Ireland was added under the Acts of Union of 1800.

The World Factbook says the United Kingdom was created when the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, which had been distinct states under a single monarchy, were joined under the 1707 Acts of Union. The island of Ireland was incorporated under the 1800 Acts of Union, while Wales had been part of the Kingdom of England since the 16th century. So two unions matter: the one of 1707 that formed the state, and the one of 1800 that enlarged it to take in Ireland.
