Sultanate of Zanzibar

Caliphates and Sultanates

The Sultanate of Zanzibar was an East African Muslim state controlled by the Sultan of Zanzibar that existed between 1856 and 1964. Its territory varied over time, and after a period of decline the state held sovereignty over only the Zanzibar Archipelago and a narrow strip along the Kenyan coast, with the interior of Kenya constituting the separate British Kenya Colony. The sultanate ended on 12 January 1964, when revolutionaries led by the Afro-Shirazi Party overthrew the mainly Arab government and deposed the last sultan, Jamshid bin Abdullah, in a revolution that also resulted in the massacre of tens of thousands of Arabs.
