The French East India Company was a joint stock trading company founded in France in August 1664, planned by Jean-Baptiste Colbert under King Louis XIV to compete with the English and Dutch East India Companies for trade with India and other parts of Asia. Colbert built the company a dedicated home port, Lorient, on France's Atlantic coast. The company passed through repeated insolvency, restructuring and reorganization over the following century, including bankruptcies in 1685 and 1706 and absorption into John Law's Company in 1719, before its trading monopoly was finally abolished in 1790 and the company liquidated in 1794.
