Livonian Order

Chivalric and Religious Orders

The Livonian Order was an autonomous branch of the Teutonic Order that governed substantial territory in medieval Livonia, corresponding roughly to present-day Estonia and Latvia, from 1237 until its dissolution in 1561 to 1562. It was formed after the crusading Livonian Brothers of the Sword suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Saule in 1236 and merged the following year into the larger and better-resourced Teutonic Order as its Livonian branch, continuing much of the earlier order's crusading and colonizing mission in the eastern Baltic. Ruled by its own Landmeister, the order held extensive castles and lands across the region as part of the wider Livonian Confederation, alongside the local bishoprics, and it fought repeated wars against neighbouring Novgorod, Pskov, Lithuania and Poland over the following three centuries. Weakened by the Protestant Reformation and by escalating external pressure during the Livonian War, the order was formally dissolved when its last Landmeister, Gotthard Kettler, secularized its remaining territory in 1561, converting himself into the first hereditary Duke of Courland and Semigallia under Polish-Lithuanian suzerainty.

This entity's own description already dates the order's dissolution to 1561, when its last Landmeister secularized its remaining territory; the freshly fetched Wikipedia extract confirms 1561 as the end of the Livonian Confederation period but the single clean dissolution-year sentence sits in the fuller article body beyond what this pass quotes verbatim here.
