Enchiridion Symbolorum

The Enchiridion symbolorum, definitionum et declarationum de rebus fidei et morum, usually rendered in English as The Sources of Catholic Dogma and widely known simply as Denzinger after its first editor Heinrich Joseph Dominicus Denzinger, is a compendium of official Catholic Church teaching on faith and morals first published in 1854. Rather than reprinting documents in full, it gathers selected passages of doctrinal statements issued by popes and ecumenical councils and arranges them in chronological order, giving scholars a single reference point for tracing the development of Church teaching over time. The work has been revised and reissued in many editions since its first appearance, and it remains in active use today, with Michael Seewald taking over as its editor in 2025; theologians commonly cite it by its short name or by the abbreviation DS.
