The Act of Settlement is an act of the Parliament of England passed in 1701 that settled succession to the English and Irish crowns on Sophia of Hanover in the event that Queen Anne died without an heir. It reaffirmed the exclusion of Catholics, and of anyone married to a Catholic, from the succession, and required the monarch to be in communion with the Church of England as the Bill of Rights 1689 had already required. Sophia predeceased Anne by two months, so her son succeeded to the throne as King George I, beginning the Hanoverian dynasty in Great Britain and Ireland.
