Weimar Constitution

The Constitution of the German Reich, usually called the Weimar Constitution, was the constitution that governed Germany during the Weimar Republic. It created a federal semi-presidential republic with a parliament, the Reichstag, elected by universal suffrage under proportional representation, and an appointed Reichsrat representing the interests of the federal states. The president held supreme command of the military, broad emergency powers, and the authority to appoint and remove the chancellor, who was answerable to the Reichstag. The constitution guaranteed civic rights including freedom of speech, habeas corpus, and freedom of religion, and did not permit an established state church.
