The Ilkhanate, also known as the Il-khanate, was a Mongol khanate founded in the southwestern territories of the Mongol Empire and ruled by the Ilkhans, a lineage descended from Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan; the realm itself was officially known as the Land of Iran. Formed in the years following the death of the Great Khan Mongke in 1259, its core lay in present-day Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey, and at its height it also extended into Iraq, Syria, Armenia and Georgia. Its later rulers, including Ghazan, converted to Islam in 1295, and the state was devastated by the Black Death in the 1330s before dissolving with the death of its last khan, Abu Sa'id, in 1335.
