The Khanate of Astrakhan was a Tatar rump state of the Golden Horde, existing in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in the area adjacent to the mouth of the Volga River, around the site of the modern city of Astrakhan. Its khans claimed patrilineal descent from Toqa Temur, the thirteenth son of Jochi and a grandson of Genghis Khan. Astrakhan was one of several Tatar khanates, alongside Kazan, Crimea and Sibir, that emerged from the fragmentation of the Golden Horde's unified Mongol rule over the western steppe.
