Taiwan under Qing rule

Taiwan under Qing rule refers to the period from 1683 to 1895 during which the island of Taiwan was governed by the Qing dynasty, beginning when a Qing army under General Shi Lang defeated the Ming loyalist Kingdom of Tungning and Taiwan was formally annexed in 1684. The island was administered as Taiwan Prefecture of Fujian Province until Fujian-Taiwan Province was established in 1887, and Qing control gradually extended across the western coast, plains and northeast over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Qing government did not pursue active colonization and restricted Han migration for fear of rebellion and conflict with Taiwanese indigenous peoples, barring settlers from indigenous land, but Han settlement expanded anyway, pushing indigenous boundaries and prompting frequent rebellions; by the end of Qing rule the islands Han population had grown by more than two million. Qing rule over Taiwan ended in 1895 when the island was ceded to the Empire of Japan under the Treaty of Shimonoseki following Chinas defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War.
