Toungoo Dynasty

The Toungoo dynasty, also spelled Taungoo dynasty and known after 1599 as the Nyaungyan dynasty, was the ruling dynasty of Burma from the mid-sixteenth century to 1752, and is called the Second Burmese Empire in Burmese historiography. At its peak it exercised authority from present-day Assam and Manipur to the Cambodian frontier and from the borders of Arakan to Yunnan, and is described as probably the largest empire in the history of Southeast Asia. The dynasty ruled in two distinct periods, the First Toungoo Empire from 1510 to 1599 and the Nyaungyan Restoration from 1599 to 1752.
