The Migration Period

Also Known As Barbarian Invasions
The Late Antique World

The Migration Period, also known as the Barbarian Invasions, was a period in European history conventionally dated from about 300 to 600 CE, marked by large-scale movements of Germanic, Hunnic and other peoples across the continent that culminated in the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It overlaps substantially with Late Antiquity and the early span of the Post-Classical and Medieval Period, since the same population movements that ended the Western Empire also seeded the new kingdoms that replaced it.

FAQs

Why do sources disagree about when the Migration Period ended?

Sources agree it began around 300 CE but end it anywhere from about 600 to 700 CE.

The dating of the Migration Period is conventional, so sources give slightly different endpoints. This atlas dates it from about 300 to 600 CE, while the World History Encyclopedia describes it as a period of human migration in Europe that occurred roughly between 300 and 700 CE. Both start at 300 CE, but the end differs by a century, so treat each endpoint as approximate. The period is also called the Barbarian Invasions.

Why this is disputed. Overlapping periodization: the same population movements that end the Western Roman Empire are described by Late Antiquity as continuity and by the Migration Period as rupture.
