The Bar Kokhba Revolt, fought from 132 to 136 CE, was the last and most devastating of three major Jewish uprisings against the Roman Empire. Led by Simon bar Kokhba, the rebels succeeded in establishing an independent Jewish state that held out for more than three years before Roman forces crushed it. The revolt's suppression brought about the near-total depopulation of Judea, accompanied by mass killing, enslavement and displacement of its Jewish population.
