Shays's Rebellion

Shays's Rebellion was an armed uprising in western Massachusetts and Worcester that ran from August 1786 to February 1787. It arose among indebted farmers and citizens in response to a debt crisis and the state government's aggressive efforts to collect taxes on individuals and their trades. The uprising, named for former Continental Army officer Daniel Shays, was eventually put down by a state militia force, and the episode became a spur for strengthening the national government under the United States Constitution.
