The War of the Austrian Succession, 1740 to 1748, was a conflict between the European great powers, fought primarily in Europe, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It erupted over Maria Theresa's right to inherit the Habsburg territories, challenged by an alliance of France, Prussia and Bavaria, while she was backed by Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and Hanover. Prussia seized the Austrian province of Silesia in December 1740, and neither side achieved a decisive victory before France's position weakened by 1748 under financial strain and British naval blockades. The war ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which confirmed Maria Theresa's titles while Austria ceded Silesia to Prussia.
