Charles I was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649. Born into the House of Stuart as the second son of King James VI of Scotland, he became heir apparent in 1612 and ultimately faced execution for high treason following the English Civil War, his conflict with Parliament over religion, absolutism and the divine right of kings having brought about the war and, after his defeat, the Commonwealth period under Oliver Cromwell.
