The Third Crusade (1189 to 1192), also known as the Kings' Crusade, was an attempt led by King Philip II of France, King Richard I of England and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to reconquer the Holy Land after its capture by the Ayyubid sultan Saladin in 1187. The crusade was partially successful: it recaptured the important cities of Acre and Jaffa and reversed most of Saladin's conquests, chiefly in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but it failed to achieve its central religious aim, the recapture of Jerusalem itself.
