Named historical happenings: battles, treaties, revolutions, discoveries, foundings and collapses, the turning points historians narrate rather than the states or people who took part in them. Grouped by the same period-band scheme eras use, with the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries split further into Eric Hobsbawm's four-part periodization so no single band concentrates an outsized share of the roster. Wars and their campaigns stay in this category in every period per this atlas's own charter rather than fragmenting elsewhere; what this category excludes is the polity or organization that fought or signed, each its own entity linked to the event by relationship.
