The 1959 Tibetan uprising, also called the Lhasa uprising, began on 10 March 1959 as a series of protests in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. It was fueled by fears that the government of the People's Republic of China intended to arrest the Dalai Lama, and over the following days the protests grew into demands for Tibetan independence and a reversal of China's 1951 annexation of Tibet. The uprising was suppressed by 23 March 1959, and the Dalai Lama fled into exile in India in its aftermath.
