Crimean War

The Age of Capital

The Crimean War was fought from 1853 to 1856, chiefly on the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea, between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France and the Kingdom of Sardinia, triggered by Russian ambitions toward Ottoman territory and disputes over Christian religious rights in the Holy Land. The war's central campaign was the prolonged Siege of Sevastopol, Russia's main Black Sea naval base, and it is remembered for episodes including the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava and for the nursing reforms pioneered by Florence Nightingale, whose work treating wounded soldiers helped found modern professional nursing. The war ended with Russia's defeat and the 1856 Treaty of Paris, which neutralized the Black Sea to warships and checked Russian expansion into Ottoman territory for a generation. It is also often cited as one of the first wars extensively documented by war photography and telegraph-based newspaper reporting, which brought its conditions to a wide public audience in near-real time.
