Monarchs and Rulers

Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos, also rendered Dragaš Palaeologus, was the last reigning Byzantine emperor, ruling from 23 January 1449 until his death in battle at the fall of Constantinople on 29 May 1453. His death marked the definitive end of the Eastern Roman Empire, which traced its origin to Constantine the Great's founding of Constantinople as the Roman Empire's new capital in the year 330.

FAQs

Why is Constantine XI Palaiologos sometimes called Constantine XII?

A mistaken belief that Constantine Lascaris was crowned in 1204 led to the second numbering.

Some writers number him Constantine XII because of an erroneous idea that a man named Constantine Lascaris had been crowned emperor in 1204. Britannica identifies that idea as a mistake, so the last Byzantine emperor is properly Constantine XI.
