Jean-Jacques Dessalines (c. 1758-1806) was a formerly enslaved military leader who became the first ruler of independent Haiti, the state that emerged from the Haitian Revolution. After the capture of Toussaint Louverture by French forces in 1802, Dessalines took command of the revolutionary army and led it to final victory over Napoleon's expeditionary force, declaring Haiti's independence on 1 January 1804, the first successful large-scale slave revolt to establish an independent state. He ruled first as governor-general and then as Emperor Jacques I, presiding over a government marked by land redistribution and harsh reprisals against the remaining French population, until he was assassinated in 1806 amid internal political conflict.
