Siege of Jerusalem (587 BC)

The Classical World

Jerusalem was besieged from 589 to 587 BC, marking the final phase of Judah's revolts against Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar II, king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, besieged Judah's capital city for approximately 30 months. The city fell in the summer of 587 BC, after which the Babylonians systematically destroyed Jerusalem and razed Solomon's Temple. The kingdom of Judah was dissolved, and a large segment of its population was exiled to Babylonia. The calendar is BC, so the event year alone carries the date, as a negative number following the convention used for Nebuchadnezzar II's birth and death years.
