Treaty of Adrianople (1829)

Also Known As Treaty of Edirne
Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The Treaty of Adrianople, signed in September 1829, ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1828 to 1829 between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans ceded territory in the Caucasus and along the Danube delta to Russia, granted autonomy to Serbia, recognized the effective autonomy that paved the way toward Greek independence, and opened the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits to international commercial shipping. The settlement marked a significant weakening of Ottoman authority in the Balkans and the Caucasus.

FAQs

Did the Treaty of Adrianople let Russia keep troops in Moldavia and Wallachia?

Yes. Russia could occupy Moldavia and Walachia until Turkey paid a large indemnity.

Yes, for a time. The treaty allowed Russia to occupy Moldavia and Walachia until Turkey had paid a large indemnity. The occupation was therefore tied to the money the Ottoman Empire owed Russia after the war.
