Also Known As Agreement against the Communist International
Modern International Agreements and Pacts

The Anti-Comintern Pact, officially the Agreement against the Communist International, was an anti-communist pact concluded between Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan on 25 November 1936, directed against the Communist International. It was signed by the German ambassador-at-large Joachim von Ribbentrop and the Japanese ambassador to Germany, Kintomo Mushanokoji. Italy joined the pact in 1937 and was legally recognized as an original signatory under its terms of entry, and Spain and Hungary joined in 1939, with further countries joining during the Second World War.

FAQs

What did Germany and Japan actually promise each other in the Anti-Comintern Pact?

They agreed to share information about the Comintern, cooperate in defense, act against its supporters and not make a separate deal with the Soviet Union without telling each other.

The pact was presented as a measure against the Communist International, but it was intended to serve as a military alliance aimed at the Soviet Union. Its brief text declared the Comintern a threat to world peace, committed the signatories to keep each other informed about its activities and to cooperate in their mutual defense, and invited other nations to join. A Supplementary Protocol empowered Germany and Japan to take stringent measures against those who worked for the Comintern at home or abroad. Both also promised not to sign a separate agreement with the Soviet Union without the other being informed. The pact went into force immediately and was valid for five years. It did not result in any coordinated German and Japanese military action.
