Adams-Onis Treaty

Also Known As Transcontinental Treaty; Spanish Cession; Florida Purchase Treaty
Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The Adams-Onis Treaty, signed in 1819 by United States Secretary of State John Quincy Adams and Spanish minister Luis de Onis, ceded Spanish Florida to the United States and fixed the western boundary of the Louisiana Purchase along a line running to the Pacific coast at the 42nd parallel. In exchange the United States assumed up to five million dollars in claims by its citizens against Spain and renounced any claim to Texas. The treaty is also known as the Transcontinental Treaty because it defined, for the first time, a boundary stretching the full width of the continent.

FAQs

Where did the Adams-Onis Treaty draw the boundary west of the Mississippi?

The line ran from the Sabine River north to the Arkansas River and then west along the 42nd parallel to the Pacific.

Article III of the treaty traced the line in stages. It began on the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Sabine River and ran north along the river's western bank to the 32nd degree of latitude. From there it ran due north to the Red River, followed the Red River west to the 100th meridian west of London, and then ran due north to the Arkansas River. It followed the southern bank of the Arkansas to its source at 42 degrees north latitude, and then ran along that parallel to the South Sea, which is the treaty's name for the Pacific.
