Anglo-Irish Treaty

Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, known in Ireland as the Treaty and officially as the Articles of Agreement for a Treaty Between Great Britain and Ireland, was an agreement between the government of the United Kingdom and the government of the Irish Republic that concluded the Irish War of Independence. It provided for the establishment of the Irish Free State within a year as a self-governing dominion within the British Empire, with a status equal to that of the Dominion of Canada. It also gave Northern Ireland, created by the Government of Ireland Act 1920, the option to opt out of the Irish Free State, an option the Parliament of Northern Ireland exercised.

FAQs

Why did the Anglo-Irish Treaty talks stall at first and who signed for Ireland?

Lloyd George offered dominion status, de Valera wanted a republic; Griffith and Collins negotiated the compromise for Ireland.

The talks began in deadlock. David Lloyd George wanted dominion home rule for Ireland, while Éamon de Valera, president of Dáil Éireann, insisted on an independent Irish republic. Negotiations began in earnest in October with Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins representing Ireland. After much debate a treaty was signed on 6 December, under which Ireland became a free state with full dominion status and the six counties of Ulster remained part of the United Kingdom.
