Kingdom of Chimor

Kingdoms and Principalities

Chimor, also known as the Kingdom of Chimor, was the political state of the Chimu culture on the northern coast of what is now Peru, arising around 900 AD as the successor to the earlier Moche culture in the same coastal river valleys. Centered on its capital city of Chan Chan, one of the largest cities in the pre-Columbian Americas, Chimor became the largest kingdom of the Late Intermediate Period in the Andes, controlling roughly a thousand kilometers of Peruvian coastline through an administration that managed extensive irrigation systems, specialized craft production, and long-distance trade. The Chimu built monumental adobe architecture and were renowned for skilled metalworking in gold, silver and copper alloys, traditions that later Andean states drew upon. Chimor's independence ended around 1470, roughly fifty years before the Spanish arrived in the region, when the kingdom was conquered by the Inca emperor Topa Inca Yupanqui and incorporated into the expanding Inca Empire.
