The Kingdom of Burundi, also known as the Kingdom of Urundi, was a Bantu kingdom in the African Great Lakes region, in the territory of what is now the Republic of Burundi, established under a royal dynasty known as the Ganwa by around the sixteenth century. Unlike the strict Hutu-Tutsi framing of neighboring Rwanda, Burundi's Ganwa princely class stood formally apart from both the Hutu and Tutsi populations it ruled over. The kingdom retained its monarchy under German colonial administration from the late nineteenth century and then under Belgian rule after the First World War, and Burundi became briefly independent as a monarchy in 1962 before the monarchy was abolished in 1966 and replaced by a republic.
