The Kingdom of Scotland was a sovereign state in northwest Europe, traditionally said to have been founded in 843, that occupied the northern part of the island of Great Britain and bordered England to the south. Its history was shaped by centuries of conflict with England, including the Wars of Scottish Independence, through which it maintained its independence, while its own territory grew to include the Hebrides and the Northern Isles, ceded by Norway in 1266 and 1472, and lost the town of Berwick to England in 1482. In 1603 James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne, joining the two kingdoms in a personal union, and in 1707 the kingdoms were merged by the Acts of Union to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, ending Scotland's existence as an independent state.

The state was created by the 1706 Treaty of Union and ratified by the Acts of Union 1707, which united the Kingdom of England (including Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland to form a single kingdom encompassing the whole island of Great Britain and its outlying islands, with the exception of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
