The Kingdom of Leon was a medieval state in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, founded in 910 when the Christian princes of Asturias moved their capital from Oviedo to the city of Leon. Its monarchs fought civil wars, wars against neighboring kingdoms, and invasions by the Moors and the Vikings to sustain the kingdom through a turbulent age; Garcia I served as its first recognized ruler from 910 to 914, and Alfonso IX was its last independent monarch before the kingdom merged with Castile around 1230. The realm persisted afterward as a constituent territory within the larger Spanish crowns until a territorial reorganization in 1833.
