The Kingdom of Navarre was a historical Iberian polity that occupied lands on both sides of the western Pyrenees, straddling what is now Spain and France. It emerged around the city of Pamplona during the early Reconquista, arising from conflicts in the buffer zone separating the Carolingian Empire from the Umayyad Emirate of Cordoba, and its founding is traditionally dated to 824, when Inigo Arista took power in Pamplona. The kingdom reached its greatest extent under Sancho III, covering territory corresponding to the modern Spanish autonomous communities of Navarre, the Basque Country and La Rioja along with French Lower Navarre, before fragmenting through dynastic divisions and losing territory to the neighboring kingdoms of Castile and Aragon.
