The Ostrogothic Kingdom, officially the Kingdom of Italy, was a barbarian kingdom established by the Germanic Ostrogoths that controlled Italy and neighboring areas between 493 and 553. Led by Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogoths overthrew the rule of Odoacer and established their own dominion, and during Theodoric's reign the kingdom flourished, with territories extending from southern France in the west to western Serbia in the southeast; Theodoric styled himself king of the Goths and Romans, reflecting his intention to govern both populations. After Theodoric's death in 526 the kingdom declined, and under the Byzantine emperor Justinian I a reconquest effort beginning in 535 initiated the Gothic War, which ultimately destroyed the Ostrogothic state by 554.
