Kingdom of Cappadocia

Kingdoms and Principalities

The Kingdom of Cappadocia was a Hellenistic era Iranian kingdom centered in the historical region of Cappadocia in what is now central Turkey, formed in 331 BC when Ariarathes, the last Achaemenid satrap of Cappadocia, declared independence after Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire. Three dynasties ruled the kingdom in succession from its capital at Mazaca, modern Kayseri, the House of Ariarathes from 331 to 96 BC, the House of Ariobarzanes from 96 to 36 BC, and the house of Archelaus from 36 BC to 17 AD, and its rulers pursued deliberate Hellenization, adopting Greek cultural forms and royal titles even as the kingdom's roots remained Iranian. The kingdom ended in 17 AD upon the death of its last king, Archelaus, when the Roman emperor Tiberius incorporated the territory as a Roman province.
