Kingdom of Nri

Kingdoms and Principalities

The Kingdom of Nri was a precolonial Igbo polity centered on the town of Agukwu-Nri in what is now Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria, distinguished from most West African states of its era by its basis in religious rather than military authority. Its ruler, the Eze Nri, functioned as a sacred king whose standing rested on ritual purification duties, control over title-taking ceremonies, and a network of traveling ritual specialists rather than a standing army or centralized bureaucratic administration. Because Nri did not govern a continuous territory through direct rule, historians more often describe it as a religious and cultural sphere of influence linking otherwise politically autonomous Igbo communities than as a conventional kingdom. Nri's ritual authority over the wider Igbo cultural region is understood to have extended over several centuries before British colonial conquest brought an end to its influence in the early twentieth century.
