Simla Agreement

The Simla Agreement is a bilateral peace treaty signed by India and Pakistan on 2 July 1972 in Shimla, the hill capital of India's Himachal Pradesh state, following Pakistan's defeat in the December 1971 war that had erupted when India intervened on the side of the Bangladeshi independence movement against Pakistani forces. Signed by Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the agreement committed both countries to resolve their disputes, including the unresolved status of Kashmir, through peaceful bilateral negotiation rather than war or outside mediation, and it converted the December 1971 ceasefire line in Kashmir into the Line of Control, which neither side was to alter unilaterally. Under its terms India returned most of the roughly 13,000 square kilometers of Pakistani territory it had occupied during the war, while retaining a small number of strategically important areas, and the agreement paved the way for Pakistan's eventual diplomatic recognition of the newly independent Bangladesh. The Simla Agreement remains the foundational bilateral framework governing India-Pakistan relations and the reference point both countries still cite in disputes over Kashmir.
