Treaty of Tlatelolco

Modern International Agreements and Pacts

The Treaty of Tlatelolco, signed in Mexico City in 1967, established Latin America and the Caribbean as the world's first nuclear-weapon-free zone in a populated region. Signatory states committed not to test, manufacture, acquire or deploy nuclear weapons on their territory, with an agency created to verify compliance. It became a model later followed by nuclear-weapon-free zone treaties in other regions.
