Camp David Accords

Modern International Agreements and Pacts

The Camp David Accords were a pair of political agreements signed on 17 September 1978 by Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, following twelve days of secret negotiations at Camp David, the U.S. presidential retreat in Maryland, hosted by President Jimmy Carter, who witnessed the signing at the White House. The first framework addressed the future of the Palestinian territories but was negotiated without Palestinian participation and was condemned by the United Nations; the second, "A Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel," led directly to the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty signed the following year, under which Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in exchange for full diplomatic recognition. Sadat and Begin were jointly awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for the accords, which produced the first peace treaty between Israel and an Arab state.

FAQs

How quickly were Egypt and Israel supposed to conclude a peace treaty after the Camp David framework?

The goal was a peace treaty within three months of signing the framework.

The second framework, for the conclusion of a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, committed the two countries to negotiate in good faith with the goal of concluding a peace treaty within three months of signing the framework. It set this as a goal, and it also named the site of the talks as a location under a United Nations flag, to be mutually agreed.
