Locarno Treaties

Also Known As Locarno Pact
Modern International Agreements and Pacts

The Locarno Treaties, known collectively as the Locarno Pact, were seven agreements negotiated in late 1925 among Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Italy, Poland and Czechoslovakia in the aftermath of the First World War. In the main treaty, the five western European signatories pledged to guarantee the inviolability of the borders between Germany and France and between Germany and Belgium as defined by the Treaty of Versailles, and to observe the demilitarized status of the German Rhineland, resolving disputes peacefully under the League of Nations. In the accompanying arbitration treaties with Poland and Czechoslovakia, Germany agreed to settle disputes peacefully but received no guarantee of its eastern border, leaving open the possibility that Germany would later seek to revise the territorial terms of the Versailles settlement in the east.

FAQs

What did the main Locarno treaty actually promise?

A joint guarantee of the German frontiers with Belgium and France and a pledge not to attack across them.

In the main treaty, signed at Locarno on 16 October 1925, Germany, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Italy collectively and severally guaranteed the frontiers between Germany and Belgium and between Germany and France as fixed under the Treaty of Versailles, together with the demilitarized zone provisions of Articles 42 and 43 of that treaty. Germany and each of those two neighbors promised never to attack or invade each other, except in legitimate defence against a flagrant breach or in action under the Covenant of the League of Nations. Disputes that diplomacy could not settle went to a judicial decision or a conciliation commission, and then to the Council of the League of Nations. If a party alleged a violation, it brought the matter to the Council, and the other signatories pledged to come to the help of the party that was attacked. The treaty was to enter into force once all ratifications were deposited at Geneva and Germany had become a member of the League of Nations.
