Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is a country in Southern and Western Europe with territories in North Africa, spanning most of the Iberian Peninsula together with the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The dynastic union of the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Aragon in 1479 under the Catholic Monarchs is often seen as the de facto unification of Spain as a nation state. Spain later led the exploration and conquest of the New World, and after the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 and the Francoist dictatorship, the restoration of democracy brought a major economic boom.
