Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a country in Southern and Western Europe consisting of a peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea plus nearly 800 islands including Sicily and Sardinia, sharing land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The history of Italy traces to numerous Italic peoples including the ancient Romans, who ruled the Mediterranean world for centuries during the Roman Republic and Roman Empire, and Rome later became the seat of the Catholic Church and the Papacy. After centuries of political and territorial divisions, the Kingdom of Italy was established in 1861 following wars of independence and the Expedition of the Thousand, and in 1946 the monarchy was replaced by a republic. Italy has the eighth-largest nominal GDP in the world and is a founding and leading member of the European Union.
