Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation in the Micronesia region of Oceania in the western Pacific Ocean, comprising the four states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae spanning about 2,700 kilometers across the Caroline Islands just north of the equator, northeast of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, south of Guam and west of the Marshall Islands; its roughly 607 islands total about 702 square kilometers of land, though the country controls nearly 3 million square kilometers of Pacific Ocean waters, the world's fourteenth-largest exclusive economic zone. Palikir, on Pohnpei, is the capital, while Weno in the Chuuk Lagoon is the largest city; the 2023 census recorded a population of about 75,817, predominantly Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Kosraean and Yapese. The Federated States of Micronesia ratified its constitution on 10 May 1979 and became a sovereign state on 3 November 1986 through a Compact of Free Association with the United States, joining the Pacific Community in 1983 and the United Nations thereafter. It is governed as a federal assembly-independent presidential republic, currently led by President Wesley Simina and Vice President Aren Palik.
