Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, personal name Li Longji, was an emperor of the Tang dynasty of China, reigning from 712 to 756, the longest reign of any Tang emperor. He seized the throne through two palace coups and inherited an empire still in its golden age, initially assisted by capable chancellors such as Yao Chong, Song Jing and Zhang Yue. Under his reign the empire reached its high point and then went into sharp decline, owing to political missteps including over-trusting the chancellors Li Linfu and Yang Guozhong and the general An Lushan, with the Tang golden age ending in the An Lushan rebellion.
