Hong Taiji, sometimes rendered Huang Taiji and referred to in older Western literature as Abahai, was the second khan of the Later Jin dynasty founded by his father Nurhaci and became the founding emperor of the Qing dynasty. He consolidated the empire his father had built, conquered Inner Mongolia and the rest of Manchuria, and invaded Korea, making it a Qing tributary state, laying groundwork for the eventual Qing conquest of the Ming dynasty that he did not live to see completed. In 1635 he renamed the Jurchen people the Manchu, and in 1636 he renamed his dynasty from Great Jin to Great Qing.
