The Treaty of Fort Laramie is an agreement between the United States and the Oglala, Miniconjou and Brule bands of the Lakota people, the Yanktonai Dakota, and the Arapaho Nation. It replaced an earlier 1851 Fort Laramie treaty that had failed almost immediately, as American miners and settlers migrated into Indian territory in violation of its terms and the United States Army's own invasion of that territory led to the Grattan massacre of 1854 and the first Sioux War. The 1868 negotiations were undertaken to replace the ineffective 1851 treaty.
