Treaty of Zaragoza

Also Known As Capitulation of Zaragoza
Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The Treaty of Zaragoza, signed in 1529 between Spain and Portugal, resolved the two crowns' rival claims to the Moluccas spice islands by fixing an antimeridian line in the eastern Pacific to complement the western line drawn by the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas. Spain relinquished its claim to the Moluccas to Portugal in exchange for a large monetary payment. The agreement effectively completed the division of the non-European world between the two Iberian powers that Tordesillas had begun.
