The Treaty of Adrianople, signed in September 1829, ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1828 to 1829 between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans ceded territory in the Caucasus and along the Danube delta to Russia, granted autonomy to Serbia, recognized the effective autonomy that paved the way toward Greek independence, and opened the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits to international commercial shipping. The settlement marked a significant weakening of Ottoman authority in the Balkans and the Caucasus.
