Peace of Augsburg

Also Known As Augsburg Settlement
Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The Peace of Augsburg, also called the Augsburg Settlement, was a treaty between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and the Schmalkaldic League, signed on 25 September 1555 in the German city of Augsburg. It formally ended the religious conflict between the two sides and made the legal division of Christianity permanent within the Holy Roman Empire, allowing individual rulers to choose either Lutheranism or Roman Catholicism as their state's official confession. Calvinism was not granted the same recognition until the later Peace of Westphalia.

FAQs

How did the Peace of Augsburg decide which religion a state would follow?

The ruler's religion, Catholic or Lutheran, determined the religion of the state, with both tolerated in the imperial cities.

The treaty stipulated that the religion of the ruler was to determine whether a state was to be exclusively Catholic or Lutheran. In the Holy Roman Empire's more than eighty imperial cities, both Lutheranism and Catholicism were to be tolerated. Ecclesiastical princes who turned Protestant were obliged to resign their sees, according to a clause inserted by Ferdinand. The treaty recognized only Lutheranism and Catholicism as licit religions, which is why the conversion of several high-ranking princes to Calvinism in the 1560s and 1570s strained its terms. Calvinism gained legal recognition within the Empire only with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.
