Federated States of Micronesia

Modern Sovereign Republics

The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation in the Micronesia region of Oceania in the western Pacific Ocean, comprising the four states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae spanning about 2,700 kilometers across the Caroline Islands just north of the equator, northeast of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, south of Guam and west of the Marshall Islands; its roughly 607 islands total about 702 square kilometers of land, though the country controls nearly 3 million square kilometers of Pacific Ocean waters, the world's fourteenth-largest exclusive economic zone. Palikir, on Pohnpei, is the capital, while Weno in the Chuuk Lagoon is the largest city; the 2023 census recorded a population of about 75,817, predominantly Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Kosraean and Yapese. The Federated States of Micronesia ratified its constitution on 10 May 1979 and became a sovereign state on 3 November 1986 through a Compact of Free Association with the United States, joining the Pacific Community in 1983 and the United Nations thereafter. It is governed as a federal assembly-independent presidential republic, currently led by President Wesley Simina and Vice President Aren Palik.

FAQs

Which powers governed the islands of the Federated States of Micronesia before independence?

Spain, Germany, Japan and then the United States administered the islands before the 1979 constitution and 1986 independence, according to the CIA World Factbook.

According to the CIA World Factbook, Spain exerted nominal, but not day-to-day, control over some of the islands from the 1600s and sold all of them to Germany in 1899. Japan seized the islands in 1914 and received a League of Nations mandate to administer them in 1920. In 1947 the islands came under United States administration as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The Factbook records that Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap ratified the constitution in 1979 and declared independence, which it dates to 3 November 1986.
