Jhansi State

Kingdoms and Principalities

Jhansi was an independent princely state ruled by the Maratha Newalkar dynasty under suzerainty of British India from 1804 till 1853, when the British authorities took over the state under the terms of the Doctrine of Lapse, and renamed it the Jhansi State. The state was reclaimed and ruled by the Rani of Jhansi, one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, from August 1857 to June 1858, when as the only source of authority in the city she felt obliged to assume the administration. FAQs

Why did the Rani of Jhansi take up arms against the British?

She was disinherited under the Doctrine of Lapse, which also cancelled her young son's claim to the throne.

The Doctrine of Lapse, an East India Company policy of annexation, is the grievance this account puts first. It removed her princely status and left her little more than a tenant in a modest two-storey palace with a small pension. It also invalidated her five-year-old son's legitimate claim to his father's throne, and that is what the account says finally compelled her to fight British troops rather than give up her destiny as queen.
